Historically, pearl jewellery has been used and worn by women (and men) as objects of beauty. Pearls have been used exclusively by royalty and nobility in every culture representing wealth, status and power and today are still highly desirable and to be worn with a certain pride.
There is no recorded date when someone first pried open an oyster and found a luxourious and magical pearl. Pearls are special in that they don’t have to be cut or polished, like stones, to enhance them - they are naturally beautiful.
Now due to amazing advances in pearl cultivation and harvesting technology, pearls are now accessible to everyone. So if you have or desire a pearl necklace, pearl bracelet, pearl pendant or pearl earrings, then you need to take care of them. And if you do they'll last you a life-time - passed on from generation to generation.
Handle Pearls With Care
Pearls must be always be handled carefully to keep them in the best condition.
* Always put them on after your make-up and perfume.
* Remove pearl rings before you apply body creams and take off any pearl jewellery before bathing.
* Wipe your pearls with a dampened cloth when you take them off and before putting them away in order to give them a ‘moisture boost’.
* Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents.
* Don’t put pearl jewellery in an ultrasonic cleaner.
* Pearl necklaces and pearl bracelets should be re-strung periodically, especially if you wear them regularly, so that the silk they are on remains strong.
* Storing Pearls is important too. Don’t store your pearls with other jewellery – they may scratch easily when rubbed against metal or gemstones.
* If possible keep them in a soft 'velvet' type bag or pouch.
* Keep away from direct heat or sunlight.
* Of course the best advice most of all – is to wear your pearl jewellery with pride and enjoy them!
