Mystical and Modern: Qualities to Look for in Crystal Jewellery

From diamond solitaire engagement rings in cushion cut. Crystal has been used in Jewelry for thousands of years and it has appeared in many legends and myths due to its mystical connections.  Crystal is actually a mineral that forms into distinct shapes like cylindrical, hexagonal, tetragonal, isometric, etc.  Aside from Jewellery, it also has many practical and industrial uses, making it an in-demand material.

The power of crystal Jewelry?
Crystals are a favorite component of Jewellery because they have stunning beauty.  Even on their own, unadulterated crystals are often used as display items, thanks to their distinct formation and vivid colors.  They are also well-loved because of their purported healing properties.

Beyond their mystical or psychosomatic use, crystal Jewelry is beautiful and unique because it is naturally formed and it's rare to find two crystals that are exactly the same.  They are also quite affordable and very adaptable as design components.  They can be used anywhere including Jewelry, clothing, accessories, even gadgets.

Naming that crystal
For first time buyers, the image of a crystal is that of a pure white or clear and transparent material.  However, crystal can exhibit many vivid colors.  Pyrite, an isometric crystal, has a metallic yellow color, which is why it is often called fool's gold.  Zircon and wulfenite, both tetragonal, can have the brilliance similar to a Diamond.

Swarovski crystal Jewellery
Probably the most well-known make and brand of crystal Jewellery is Swarovski.  It is also the most imitated and faked, which makes it important that you learn more about it.

The best Swarovski crystals come from Austria, although other good quality crystals are also being produced elsewhere.  If Jewelry is being sold as Swarovski, look for the swan logo.  However, if you will be buying Swarovski crystals and components, the swan logo shouldn't appear.

Swarovski crystals are machine-cut, so you should look for precision when buying this type of crystal Jewellery.  Look for identical or near-identical faceting.

Buying crystal Jewellery
Always look at the quality of the crystal used in a Jewelry setting.  Check for flaws such as cracks, scratches, spots, lines and cloudy areas.  Go for the clearest crystal sporting a vivid, rich color.  An 'oily' film near the surface of the crystal is also a sign of poor quality.

Next, look for the design and the setting.  Check the clasp and the back wall for flaws.  Make sure the crystal is set in a sturdy metal to ensure that it won't come loose later.

Crystal Jewellery can be a lovely and delicate addition to your collection.  They also shine with a fire all their own.  Choose one that truly speaks of your personality and mood.
